Breed restrictions, weight limits, and pet fees can block an otherwise perfect apartment. We pre-filter San Antonio communities for the ones that welcome your pet - including no-breed-restriction properties, units with private yards, and communities with dog parks and pet wash stations.
We also set honest expectations on pet deposits, fees, and monthly pet rent so there are no move-in surprises, and we can pair pet-friendly search with second-chance approval when you need both.
How San Antonio Pet Policies Work
San Antonio Second Chance Apartments is a TREC-licensed locating team with 10+ years of experience helping pet owners find apartments across San Antonio. Pet policies vary more between two complexes than people expect - one property a block from another can ban a specific breed, allow it up to 50 pounds, or have no breed list at all. Pet fees, deposits, and monthly pet rent stack differently too.
We pre-screen each apartment community for breed list, weight cap, pet count, and total pet cost before you tour. That way, no one falls in love with a unit they can’t move into.
Breed Restrictions and Weight Limits
Common restricted breeds across San Antonio include Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, and a handful of others. But many apartments - including newer construction along Loop 1604 and pet-forward operators near Alamo Heights - have dropped breed restrictions entirely. Weight caps in the 50-80 pound range are common.
We pull the current list from each leasing office (not the website, which is often out of date) and match it to your pet.
What Pet Deposits, Fees, and Rent Really Cost
When you’re budgeting, plan for:
- Pet deposit: $200-$500, sometimes refundable, sometimes not
- One-time pet fee: $200-$400 at many communities
- Monthly pet rent: $20-$45 per pet
- Renters insurance with pet liability: A few dollars extra a month, sometimes required
For a single mid-size dog in 2026, total upfront pet cost often runs $400-$800 plus monthly rent. We confirm exact numbers per community.
Yards, Dog Parks, and Pet Amenities
If your priority is a private fenced yard, look at townhome-style apartments and select garden communities. If a bark park, paw spa, or pet wash station matters more, newer apartments in Stone Oak, the Medical District, Northwest San Antonio, and Schertz often include all three.
